How is heat exhaustion treated?

Short answer
Heat exhaustion is treated by moving to a cool place, cooling the body, resting and replacing fluids and salts while watching for heatstroke.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First action
- Stop exertion and move somewhere cool
- Fluids
- Offer small sips only when the person is alert and swallowing safely
- Emergency signs
- Confusion, collapse, seizure or inability to drink
What is happening
Heat exhaustion develops when sweating and heat exposure cause the body to lose fluid and salt faster than they are replaced. It can cause weakness, [Dizziness](/symptoms/dizziness/), headache, nausea, thirst and heavy sweating. The person is usually alert, but heat illness can worsen quickly, especially in humid conditions, during exertion or when drinking is difficult.
Immediate steps
Stop activity and move the person into shade or an air-conditioned place. Remove unnecessary outer clothing, loosen tight clothing and cool the skin with wet cloths, a fan or a cool shower. If they are awake and able to swallow, give frequent small sips of cool water or an [Oral Rehydration Therapy](/treatments/acute-and-urgent-care/oral-rehydration-therapy/) drink. Do not give fluids to someone who is confused, vomiting repeatedly or unable to swallow.
When to call for emergency help
Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, seizure, loss of consciousness, very hot skin, severe breathing difficulty or inability to drink. These may indicate heatstroke. Seek medical care if symptoms do not improve promptly with cooling and fluids, or if vomiting prevents drinking; [IV Fluid Therapy](/treatments/acute-and-urgent-care/iv-fluid-therapy/) may be considered by clinicians.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether medicines, illness or work conditions increased your risk, how to replace fluids during future heat exposure, and when you can safely return to exercise. Mention recurring [Excessive Sweating](/symptoms/excessive-sweating/) or [Heat Intolerance](/symptoms/heat-intolerance/).

Questions people ask
What should I drink for heat exhaustion?
If alert and able to swallow, use cool water or an oral rehydration drink in small, frequent sips. Avoid forcing fluids when swallowing is unsafe.
