How is hearing loss treated?

A clinician first checks whether the change is caused by a blockage, infection, medication effect or an inner-ear problem. Earwax may be softened or removed; removal should be performed safely rather than with cotton buds. Middle-ear infection or swimmer’s ear may need treatment for inflammation or infection. Some inner-ear hearing loss cannot be reversed, but an audiology assessment can guide hearing aids or other listening technology. Protecting your ears from loud sound and using captions, positioning and clear speech can also make conversations easier.

Arrange an assessment if hearing is reduced, muffled or affecting work, study or conversations. Note whether one or both ears are affected, whether the change was sudden, and any pain, discharge, ringing or dizziness. Do not put objects or unprescribed drops into the ear. Seek urgent medical assessment for hearing loss that starts suddenly, especially in one ear, or follows a head injury. Prompt care is also needed with severe ear pain, bloody or pus-like discharge, facial weakness, marked dizziness or new neurological symptoms.
