How is itchy groin treated?

The crease can itch because of sweat and rubbing, an inflamed fold called intertrigo, yeast, erythrasma or a fungal infection known as jock itch. The rash pattern helps: fungus often extends along the inner thigh with a more defined edge, while irritation may affect surfaces that rub together. A clinician may inspect the skin and test a scale sample when the diagnosis is unclear.

Wash gently, pat the folds fully dry and change out of damp clothing promptly. Choose loose, breathable underwear and avoid fragranced soaps, wipes and powders that sting. If a clinician recommends a topical antifungal, apply it for the instructed course and do not share towels, clothing or razors. Avoid steroid cream alone unless prescribed, because it can mask or worsen an undiagnosed fungal rash.

Seek review if the rash is painful, cracked, oozing, rapidly spreading or accompanied by fever. Arrange an examination when itching persists despite sensible skin care, returns repeatedly, involves the genitals, or occurs with diabetes or a weakened immune system.
