Short answer

Glandular fever is usually treated with rest, fluids and symptom relief while the immune system clears the infection.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Usual approach
Rest, fluids and symptom relief
Activity caution
Pause contact sports until medically cleared

What treatment involves

Glandular fever, also called infectious mononucleosis, is commonly assessed from symptoms and an examination. A Blood Test may be used when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms need further assessment. Antibiotics do not treat the virus itself, although a clinician may prescribe other treatment if a separate bacterial infection is found.

Fever and a Sore Throat can make drinking difficult. Take regular sips, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, and use suitable pain or fever relief only as directed. Marked tiredness can continue after the throat and glands improve, so increase activity gradually.

What you can do

Rest, drink enough to keep your urine pale, and avoid alcohol while you are unwell. Avoid contact sports, heavy lifting and activities that could cause a blow to the abdomen until a clinician says they are safe, because the spleen can become enlarged.

Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are severe, last longer than expected, or return after improvement. Do not take an antibiotic left over from another illness.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing saliva, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Seek prompt advice if you cannot drink, are passing very little urine, or have a persistent high Fever.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need a blood test, which activities to pause, how to manage a painful throat, and when you can safely return to exercise, school or work.

Questions people ask

Do antibiotics cure glandular fever?

No. Glandular fever is usually viral, so antibiotics do not treat the infection itself. They may be considered only when a separate bacterial infection is diagnosed.

How long should I rest?

Rest while fever, severe throat symptoms or marked exhaustion continue, then return to normal activity gradually according to how you feel and clinical advice.
