How is genital herpes treated?

A clinician may prescribe antiviral tablets during a first episode or a later flare. Treatment works best when started promptly after sores or warning symptoms appear. It can shorten the episode and reduce the severity of symptoms, but it does not remove the virus from the body.

Assessment may include an examination and a swab from a fresh sore. A clinician can also arrange STI Screening when another infection needs checking. Pain when passing urine or vulval pain can occur with genital sores; these symptoms do not by themselves identify the cause.

Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and finish the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing, and use simple pain relief only if it is suitable for you. Avoid sexual contact while sores or blisters are present; condoms can reduce, but cannot eliminate, transmission when symptoms are absent.

Arrange a GP Consultation for a new episode, recurrent symptoms, pregnancy, or uncertainty about the diagnosis. Do not share towels or sex toys during an outbreak, and wash hands after touching the affected area.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe pain, difficulty passing urine, sores spreading quickly, fever, eye symptoms, or symptoms during pregnancy. Urgent assessment is also appropriate if you feel very unwell or have a weakened immune system.
