How is elbow pain treated?

Short answer
Elbow pain is treated by identifying its cause, reducing aggravating loads, restoring movement and using targeted care when needed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the cause matters
Pain around the elbow can arise from a tendon, bursa, joint or nearby nerve. Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow affect different tendon regions; olecranon bursitis causes swelling over the back of the elbow; cubital tunnel syndrome can cause tingling or numbness into the ring and little fingers. Elbow osteoarthritis may cause stiffness and pain with movement.
An examination helps locate tenderness, check strength and sensation, and assess how the elbow moves. Imaging or other tests may be suggested when the history or examination raises a specific concern.
Practical treatment steps
Temporarily reduce the grip, lift, throw or leaning activity that brings on pain, but keep comfortable movement so the elbow does not become more restricted. Ice or heat may feel helpful for some people. A clinician can advise on suitable pain relief, taking account of other medicines and medical conditions.
Physiotherapy may use progressive strengthening, stretching and technique changes. Shockwave therapy or a PRP injection may be discussed for selected tendon problems; suitability depends on the diagnosis rather than pain intensity alone.
When to seek care
Book an assessment when pain persists, interferes with work or sleep, or comes with weakness, tingling or reduced movement. Seek urgent care after major trauma, if the elbow looks deformed, or if severe swelling, fever, spreading redness or a cold or pale hand develops.
Questions for your doctor
Which structure is causing my pain? Which activity should I modify, and what movement is safe? Would physiotherapy, shockwave therapy or PRP injection be appropriate for the diagnosis you suspect?

Questions people ask
Should I rest an aching elbow completely?
Complete rest is rarely the whole plan; gentle, comfortable movement is often useful while aggravating loads are reduced.
Can elbow pain need more than one treatment?
Yes. A plan may combine activity changes, pain relief, exercises and cause-specific care.
