How is chronic myeloid leukaemia treated?

CML is driven by an abnormal signal in blood-forming cells. Targeted medicines called tyrosine kinase inhibitors block that signal, slowing the production of abnormal cells. The medicine is taken as prescribed, and blood tests plus molecular monitoring show how the leukaemia is responding. The haematology team may adjust the dose or change medicines if response, side effects or interactions require it.

Allogeneic stem cell transplant uses blood-forming stem cells from a donor to rebuild the marrow and can provide a different treatment route. Because it carries substantial short- and long-term risks, it is generally discussed only when the expected benefit justifies those risks, such as difficult-to-control disease or selected advanced situations.

Take your CML medicine at the same time as directed and check before starting a new prescription, supplement or herbal product. Do not stop it without speaking to your haematology team. Keep appointments for blood and molecular tests, and record missed doses or new symptoms. Ask about safe exercise, vaccinations, pregnancy planning and practical help with long-term medicine routines.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, sudden weakness, confusion, heavy bleeding or a high temperature. Contact the team promptly for persistent vomiting, yellowing of the skin, marked swelling, troublesome rash, new abdominal fullness, night sweats or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms have multiple possible causes, so assessment is needed rather than assuming they show disease progression.
