How is chronic cough treated?

A cough that persists can arise from more than one problem. Nasal inflammation may cause mucus to drain into the throat, while acid reflux can irritate the voice box and trigger coughing. Some medicines, smoking, asthma or other lung conditions may also contribute. A GP consultation helps connect the cough with triggers, timing, breathing symptoms, hoarse voice or postnasal drip.

Keep a brief record of when you cough, what brings it on, and whether you bring up phlegm or feel breathless. Treatment may include managing nasal allergy, reflux or airway inflammation; stopping a contributing medicine should only happen with prescriber guidance. A clinician may arrange spirometry to assess airflow and a chest X-ray when the history or examination suggests it. Avoid smoke and other inhaled irritants while assessment is underway.

Arrange prompt medical review for coughing blood, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, severe breathlessness, high fever, confusion or a cough that is rapidly worsening. Urgent help is needed if breathing becomes difficult at rest or lips look blue. Hoarseness that does not settle also deserves assessment.
