How is atopic dermatitis treated?

Atopic dermatitis causes an itchy, easily irritated skin barrier. Treatment may differ for the face, eyelids, folds and thicker body skin. Cleanse gently, keep nails short and notice personal triggers such as fragranced products, heat, sweat or rough fabrics. During a flare, a clinician may recommend a topical anti-inflammatory medicine and explain where and how long to apply it. Do not put a strong medicine near the eyes without specific advice. Book a review when flares are frequent, treatment is not controlling itch, or the rash affects sleep, school or work. Seek prompt care for oozing, crusting, rapidly worsening redness, fever, painful blisters or eye-area swelling.
