How effective is whole-brain radiotherapy for small cell lung cancer?

Small cell lung cancer can spread to the brain. Whole-brain radiotherapy directs radiation across the brain to treat known lesions and areas that may contain cancer cells too small to appear on imaging. Treatment may aim to reduce neurological symptoms, limit growth and maintain function.

The team weighs brain scans, symptoms, the cancer’s response outside the brain, general health and other treatments. Chemotherapy, immunotherapy or another cancer treatment may be part of the plan. Follow-up uses symptom review, neurological checks and imaging rather than one single measure of effectiveness.

Tell the oncology team about headaches, nausea, weakness, seizures, balance problems, memory changes and all medicines. Ask whether steroids or anti-seizure treatment is needed, and how treatment sessions will be scheduled alongside care for the lung cancer.

Fatigue, scalp sensitivity and hair loss can happen during or after treatment. Plan transport if concentration or alertness is affected, take medicines exactly as prescribed, and keep follow-up visits so symptoms and scan findings can guide the next decision.

Get emergency help for a first or prolonged seizure, sudden weakness, new difficulty speaking, severe headache with vomiting, confusion, fainting or a sudden change in vision. Contact the oncology team promptly if neurological symptoms worsen or you cannot take prescribed medicines.
