How effective is whole-brain radiotherapy for brain metastases?

Radiation is delivered to the brain over a planned course to treat visible metastases and cancer cells too small to see on scans. The aim may be to ease headaches, weakness, seizures or other neurological symptoms, slow further growth, and protect day-to-day function.

Doctors assess benefit through symptoms, neurological examination and follow-up brain imaging. Swelling can temporarily affect symptoms, so medicines such as steroids may be used when prescribed. Other options, including focused radiation, surgery or medicines for the original cancer, may be considered for selected situations.

Tell the radiation team about seizures, headaches, balance changes, medicines and any trouble with memory or concentration. Ask how appointments will be arranged, whether a treatment mask is needed, and which medicines should be taken before each session.

Fatigue, scalp irritation and temporary hair loss can occur. Rest, protect sensitive skin as advised, avoid driving if symptoms or medicines impair alertness, and keep imaging and oncology appointments so the response can be reviewed.

Seek urgent help for a new seizure, sudden weakness or numbness, severe headache with vomiting, confusion, fainting, difficulty speaking or a sudden change in vision. Contact the treatment team for worsening symptoms, marked sleepiness or inability to take prescribed medicines.
