How effective is vaginal pessary fitting for cystocele?

A pessary sits inside the vagina and helps support the front vaginal wall, where a cystocele may develop. It may reduce a bulge, pelvic heaviness, pressure and some leakage or difficulty emptying the bladder. The first device may not be the right size or shape; fitting often involves trying options while checking comfort, movement and urination. A pessary manages symptoms but does not repair weakened support tissues.

Follow the clinician's advice about removal, cleaning and follow-up. Tell them if the pessary slips out, causes pressure, rubbing, pain, bleeding, unusual discharge or difficulty passing urine. Some people remove and replace a device themselves, while others need clinic care. Pelvic-floor exercises, bowel-habit changes and treating a cough may complement support, depending on your assessment.

Arrange review if symptoms remain troublesome, the pessary repeatedly falls out or intercourse becomes painful. Seek prompt care for new bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, fever, severe pelvic pain or inability to pass urine. Do not leave a painful or displaced device unaddressed, because the vaginal tissue may become irritated.

Ask which pessary type fits your prolapse, whether you can remove it, and how often it should be checked. Discuss exercise, sex, discharge, local oestrogen if tissues are fragile, and alternatives if support remains inadequate.
