How effective is tumour removal surgery for gallbladder cancer?

The gallbladder sits beside the liver and bile ducts, so an operation may involve removing the gallbladder and a small or larger area of nearby liver. Nearby lymph nodes and involved bile duct tissue may also be considered. The surgeon balances cancer removal with safe blood flow, bile drainage and liver function.

Imaging helps show whether the cancer has reached nearby organs or distant sites. If complete removal is not possible, other treatments may focus on slowing growth, easing symptoms or relieving a bile duct blockage. Treatment after surgery may be discussed according to the pathology findings.

Ask whether the diagnosis was found after gallbladder surgery or through targeted testing, because the next step can differ. Request an explanation of the scan findings, the intended surgical margin and any planned liver or bile duct work. Discuss nutrition, recovery, drain care and whether chemotherapy or another treatment is advised after the operation.

Seek medical advice for yellow skin or eyes, fever, chills, worsening upper-abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or confusion. These can accompany impaired bile drainage or infection. After surgery, contact the team urgently for severe pain, fever, heavy bleeding, increasing abdominal swelling, breathing difficulty or a wound that becomes red and drains pus.
