How effective is tumour ablation for liver metastases?

Liver metastases are cancer deposits that began in another organ. During ablation, a specialist directs energy or extreme cold into a chosen deposit to damage cancer cells. This local treatment may be considered when the deposits are limited, reachable and separated from structures that must be protected. It can aim to control a liver area, reduce symptoms or support a broader plan.

Ablation does not identify the behaviour of the original cancer by itself. The team considers the primary cancer, scan findings, previous medicines, liver reserve and whether disease is present outside the liver. Several deposits may require a different local or whole-body approach. Follow-up scans show how the treated sites are changing and whether other areas need attention.

Bring a current list of medicines, allergies and previous treatments to the oncology appointment. Ask whether the proposed procedure is intended to control one site, several sites or symptoms, and how it fits with systemic therapy. Discuss the scan findings, expected recovery, possible repeat treatment and the schedule for reviewing the response. Do not stop blood-thinning medicine unless the treating team gives you a plan.

After the procedure, report increasing pain, fever, persistent vomiting, new jaundice, unusual sleepiness, fainting, worsening weakness or bleeding at the puncture site. Emergency care is needed for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding or severe pain that does not settle with the prescribed plan.

What is the original cancer and how does it affect treatment choice? Which liver deposits can be reached safely? Is the goal local control, symptom relief or both? How will medicines and other treatments be timed around ablation? What scan or examination will show whether it helped?
