How effective is tumour ablation for kidney cancer?

During tumour ablation, a specialist guides a probe through the skin into the kidney using imaging. Heat or freezing is then used to destroy the targeted tumour. It is most often considered for a smaller, localised tumour or when preserving kidney function and avoiding a larger operation are priorities.

The tumour's size, position and distance from nearby organs affect whether the probe can reach it safely. Ablation treats the targeted area, so follow-up imaging is needed to check the treated zone. Sometimes further treatment is considered if living tumour tissue remains or the cancer returns.

Ask the urology team how the tumour's location affects the choice between ablation, surgery and monitoring. Discuss kidney function, bleeding risk, anaesthesia, medicines that affect clotting and the imaging schedule. After treatment, follow instructions about activity, fluids and wound care, and attend every scan review.

Mild soreness or tiredness may follow the procedure. Tell the team about worsening pain, blood in the urine, fever, reduced urine output or new weakness, because these symptoms may need assessment.

Seek urgent help for severe or increasing flank pain, heavy blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, fainting, chest pain, serious breathing difficulty or fever with shaking chills after ablation.
