A transvaginal ultrasound uses a slim probe placed in the vagina to create images of the womb, its lining and nearby pelvic structures. It can help explain abnormal bleeding and show features that need closer assessment. The appearance of the lining can be affected by age, hormones and other conditions, so an ultrasound result is not a cancer diagnosis.

If the scan raises concern, a clinician may recommend an endometrial biopsy or hysteroscopy. The laboratory examination of tissue is what identifies abnormal cells and helps determine the treatment plan.

Tell the imaging team about bleeding, pelvic pain, pregnancy possibility, infection symptoms or difficulty with internal examinations.
