How effective is transvaginal ultrasound for ectopic pregnancy?

The scan uses an internal ultrasound probe to view the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries more closely than an abdominal scan can in early pregnancy. It may show a pregnancy inside the uterus, an empty uterus when a pregnancy is expected, a pregnancy outside the uterus, or fluid in the pelvis. An empty uterus does not by itself confirm an ectopic pregnancy because the pregnancy may be too early to see.

Clinicians usually combine the scan with symptoms, examination and pregnancy hormone measurements over time. A repeat scan may be useful when the first images are inconclusive. Follow the assessment plan even if the first scan does not locate the pregnancy. Keep any appointment for repeat imaging or hormone testing, and tell the clinical team about pain, bleeding, dizziness or a change in symptoms. Do not wait for a later scan if symptoms become severe.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, or heavy vaginal bleeding during a possible pregnancy. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding and need prompt assessment.

Ask whether the pregnancy location was seen, what the scan findings mean, whether repeat imaging or hormone testing is needed, and which symptoms should prompt emergency care.
