How effective are topical retinoids for razor bumps?

Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, occur when shaved hairs curve back into the skin and trigger inflammation. A topical retinoid encourages more even shedding of skin cells and can make follicular blockage less likely. It does not change the direction of hair growth, so close shaving may continue to trigger bumps. Redness, peeling, dryness, stinging, or an early flare can occur, especially on the neck or in sensitive skin.

Use the prescribed product in a thin layer on clean, completely dry skin, following the schedule given by your clinician. Starting less often can help your skin adjust. Apply a bland moisturiser and use daytime sun protection because irritation can make dark marks more noticeable. Avoid applying it immediately after shaving, and do not scrub active bumps.
