How effective are topical retinoids for acne?

Acne develops when oil, dead skin cells and inflammation contribute to blocked follicles. Topical retinoids help keep pores from becoming blocked and can support clearer skin over time. They may also help fade the look of post-acne marks by encouraging more even cell turnover, but they do not erase established scars. Early dryness, peeling or a temporary increase in visible spots can occur. This does not prove the treatment is suitable, so worsening irritation should be discussed rather than pushed through.

Apply a thin layer exactly as prescribed, usually to the acne-prone area rather than only to individual spots. Use gentle cleansing, a non-comedogenic moisturiser and daytime sun protection.
