How effective is topical antifungal treatment for skin yeast infection?

Skin yeast infection, or cutaneous candidiasis, often develops in warm, moist areas such as skin folds. An antifungal applied to the affected skin targets yeast at the surface. It will not treat every red or itchy rash, because irritation, bacteria, eczema and other conditions can look similar. The affected area may feel less sore before the colour and scaling fully settle.

Wash gently, pat the area dry and apply the prescribed or recommended product in a thin layer. Follow the full directions even if symptoms start easing. Keep folds as dry as practical, change damp clothing and avoid tight materials that trap heat. Do not apply a combination cream containing a steroid unless a clinician has specifically advised it, because the wrong product can mask or worsen an infection.

Seek care if the rash is rapidly spreading, very painful, blistered, ulcerated, producing pus or accompanied by fever. Arrange a review when there is no clear improvement after the advised course, when infections keep returning, or when you have diabetes or a weakened immune system.

Ask how the diagnosis was made, which formulation suits the body site, and how long treatment should continue. Ask whether moisture control, testing or another medicine is needed if the rash does not settle.
