Short answer

Topical antifungal treatment can clear uncomplicated athlete's foot when used consistently, but the skin may take longer to look normal after the fungus is controlled.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why results take time

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that commonly causes scaling, cracking, itching, or soreness between the toes and on the soles. An antifungal medicine acts against the fungus at the skin surface. It may stop spread and reduce itching before all scaling has disappeared, because irritated skin needs time to repair.

A rash that is mainly wet, very painful, crusted, or located beyond the feet may need examination. Eczema, contact irritation, and bacterial infection can resemble fungus, and the wrong product will not address the cause.

Use and hygiene tips

Apply the medicine to washed, thoroughly dried skin, including the surrounding area if the instructions say so. Complete the recommended course rather than stopping as soon as itching eases. Dry carefully between the toes, change damp socks, let shoes air out, and avoid sharing towels or footwear. Wash hands after application unless the hands are the treated area.

Avoid using a steroid cream on its own for a suspected fungal rash, since it can alter the appearance and allow infection to persist. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before combining products.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care if the foot becomes hot, swollen, increasingly painful, or drains pus, or if redness spreads. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation should obtain medical advice early for a foot rash or crack. Arrange review when the infection does not improve after the advised course, keeps returning, or involves the nails.

Questions for your doctor

Does this look like athlete's foot or another rash? Which antifungal suits the affected areas and my other medicines? How long should I continue after symptoms improve? Should household members, shoes, or nail changes be checked? What foot-care routine will help prevent another episode?

Why is the skin still flaky after itching improves?

The fungus may be settling while the damaged outer skin is still shedding and repairing.
