How effective is thyroid function test for goitre?

A goitre means the thyroid gland is enlarged. Blood testing commonly checks thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroid hormones to see whether the gland is working too slowly, too quickly, or within the expected range. This helps guide the next step and can uncover a functional problem even when symptoms are mild. A normal result does not explain the size, texture, or structure of the gland, and an abnormal result does not by itself show why the enlargement developed. Examination and imaging may therefore be needed.

Arrange an appointment if you notice swelling at the front of the neck, a feeling of pressure, or a change in the way you swallow. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention palpitations, heat or cold intolerance, tiredness, weight change, voice change, or a family history of thyroid disease. Your clinician may combine the blood result with a neck examination and, when appropriate, an ultrasound or other assessment. Do not change thyroid medicine based on a result without medical advice.

Seek urgent help if neck swelling causes difficulty breathing, rapidly worsens, or makes swallowing saliva difficult. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for new persistent hoarseness, severe chest discomfort, fainting, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. These symptoms need clinical review because a blood test alone cannot assess pressure on the airway or other urgent problems.

Ask which thyroid hormones are being measured, what the result means alongside the neck examination, and whether imaging is needed. Ask when testing should be repeated and which symptoms would suggest that the goitre or thyroid activity needs earlier review.
