How effective is spinal fusion for spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis means one vertebra has shifted in relation to another. This can narrow space for nearby nerves or create painful movement. Fusion joins the involved vertebrae so the segment is held more firmly, often alongside a procedure to relieve nerve pressure. It may be considered when symptoms persist despite non-surgical care, when movement is painful, or when nerve compression and alignment need a combined plan.

The operation cannot reverse every source of back or leg pain. Nerve symptoms may improve gradually, while stiffness and activity limits are expected during healing. Strength, flexibility and safe lifting are rebuilt in stages.

Ask whether your slip is stable or changes with movement, whether a nerve is compressed and what the images show at the relevant level. Discuss physiotherapy, medicines and activity changes that have been tried. Tell the team about bone health, smoking, medicines and work demands. After surgery, follow restrictions, walk as advised and attend reviews before returning to heavier tasks.

Get urgent help for new bladder or bowel difficulty, numbness around the inner thighs, or rapidly worsening weakness. Contact the surgical team quickly for fever, wound leakage, new leg weakness, increasing numbness or pain that is escalating rather than settling.
