How effective is skin cancer surgery for melanoma?

Melanoma develops from pigment-producing cells and may arise in an existing mole or on previously clear skin. The first operation generally removes the lesion for diagnosis and takes a margin of nearby skin. If melanoma is confirmed, a wider excision may be advised. The pathology report describes features such as depth and whether the edges are clear; these findings help determine staging and whether lymph-node assessment, scans, medicines, or specialist review should be considered. Removing the visible skin lesion does not alone answer whether cells have travelled elsewhere.

Bring information about medicines, allergies, previous biopsies, and family or personal history of skin cancer. Ask when pathology will be available and how the result changes the plan. Care for the wound as instructed, and report problems rather than applying unapproved products. Keep scheduled oncology or dermatology appointments even when the wound looks healed. Examine your skin and lymph-node areas as taught, use sun protection, and report a changing mole or new pigmented spot. Treatment decisions should be based on the individual pathology and examination, not appearance alone.

Contact the surgical team for bleeding that does not settle with advised pressure, worsening pain, spreading redness, discharge, fever, or wound separation. Seek prompt dermatology review for a new or changing pigmented lesion, a firm lump near the scar, or a persistently enlarged lymph node. These findings require assessment and do not by themselves confirm melanoma spread.
