How effective is shoulder reduction for shoulder dislocation?

Short answer

Shoulder reduction is usually effective at restoring the joint to alignment, but it does not by itself repair every injured ligament, tendon, bone, or nerve.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Immediate goal
Restore the shoulder joint to alignment and assess the arm.
Next priority
Protect healing tissues and rebuild controlled movement.

What reduction can and cannot do

A clinician guides the upper arm bone back into the shoulder socket, often after pain relief or sedation. Once aligned, the arm may look and feel more normal, but the joint can remain painful and unstable. The surrounding capsule, labrum, muscles, or bone may have been stretched or damaged during the dislocation. An examination and imaging help identify those injuries and check circulation and nerve function. A first dislocation and a repeat dislocation may need different follow-up plans.

After the joint is realigned

Keep the arm supported exactly as instructed and do not test the shoulder by lifting or rotating it early. Attend the recommended review, where movement, strength, sensation, and stability can be checked. Begin exercises only when advised; rehabilitation usually progresses from protected motion to strength and coordination. Return to driving, work, or sport should follow clinical guidance rather than pain alone. If the shoulder slips again, support the arm and seek urgent care instead of trying to force it back yourself.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help if the shoulder appears out of place again, pain is severe, the hand becomes cold or changes colour, or there is new numbness or weakness. After reduction, seek prompt review for fever, increasing swelling, worsening pain, or inability to move the fingers.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether imaging found a fracture or soft-tissue injury, how long the shoulder needs support, when physiotherapy starts, and what activities raise the risk of another dislocation. Ask whether your age, sport, work, or previous episodes change the follow-up plan.

Questions people ask

Does reduction prevent another dislocation?

Reduction restores alignment but does not guarantee stability; rehabilitation and treatment of associated injuries influence future control.

Can I reduce my own shoulder at home?

No. Attempts can worsen bone, blood-vessel, or nerve injury. Keep the arm supported and obtain urgent medical care.
