How effective is sentinel lymph node biopsy for melanoma?

After the melanoma is removed, a tracer helps the surgical team identify the first lymph node or nodes receiving drainage from the area. Those nodes are removed and examined for melanoma cells. A clear result provides useful information about the sampled drainage basin, while melanoma in a sentinel node indicates that the cancer has reached that node and may change staging and treatment planning.

The test cannot show that every cancer cell has been removed, and a clear sentinel node does not rule out future melanoma elsewhere. The result is interpreted with the primary tumour’s features, examination, and any other imaging or pathology. Ask why the biopsy is recommended, which lymph-node basin will be checked, and whether it will occur with the melanoma excision. A new or changing mole, persistent lump, or unexplained swollen node also deserves prompt review, even if an earlier biopsy was clear.
