How effective is salpingectomy for ectopic pregnancy?

In a salpingectomy, the surgeon removes the fallopian tube containing the pregnancy. This removes the pregnancy from its abnormal location and helps control bleeding when the tube has ruptured or is at high risk of rupture. The operation does not continue the pregnancy, because a tubal ectopic pregnancy cannot develop safely in the tube.

Whether the other tube is healthy, whether bleeding has occurred, and the appearance of the affected tube all influence the surgical choice. In selected situations, another operation or medicine may be considered instead. Removing one tube does not automatically prevent future pregnancy, but future care should include early assessment in a new pregnancy.

If an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, follow the urgent assessment plan rather than waiting for symptoms to settle. Tell the team about pain, bleeding, dizziness, blood group information and previous ectopic pregnancy or tubal surgery. After salpingectomy, attend follow-up, use the advised pain relief, avoid strenuous activity until cleared and discuss emotional support, contraception and timing of another pregnancy.

Severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, marked weakness, heavy vaginal bleeding or collapse can signal internal bleeding and needs emergency care. After surgery, seek urgent advice for worsening pain, fever, persistent vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling, wound problems or heavy bleeding. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.
