How effective is salpingectomy for blocked fallopian tubes?

A salpingectomy removes one fallopian tube or, when necessary, both. It does not reopen the removed tube. If the other tube is healthy and ovulation occurs, natural conception may remain possible. If both tubes are absent or unable to function, sperm and egg cannot meet through the tubes, so assisted fertility treatment may be discussed.

A swollen or damaged tube can affect the space around the ovary and may complicate fertility treatment. Removing it can change the treatment plan, but the decision must balance possible benefit with ovarian reserve, previous operations, adhesions and the reason for the blockage.

Ask how the blockage was confirmed and whether the other tube, ovaries and uterus have been assessed. Discuss your pregnancy goals, ovarian reserve, semen results and whether fertility treatment is planned before surgery. Follow advice on activity, wound care and contraception during recovery. Keep the fertility appointment after healing so the next step is based on the updated anatomy.

After surgery, seek prompt medical advice for fever, increasing abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting, worsening redness or drainage from an incision, or difficulty passing urine. Emergency help is needed for severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse or sudden one-sided leg swelling. Later, report persistent pelvic pain, missed periods or difficulty conceiving so the plan can be reviewed.
