How effective is sacrocolpopexy for pelvic organ prolapse?

During sacrocolpopexy, the surgeon lifts and supports the vaginal walls or top of the vagina using a surgical graft attached to strong tissue near the spine. It is usually performed through keyhole surgery or an open approach, depending on anatomy, previous operations and the surgical team.

The operation treats loss of pelvic support; it may not resolve urinary leakage, bowel difficulty, pain or sexual symptoms if these have another cause. A new or previously hidden symptom can become noticeable after the prolapse is corrected, so the consultation should cover the whole pelvic floor.

Discuss the prolapse compartment, other pelvic-floor symptoms, future pregnancy plans and alternatives such as a pessary or another repair. Ask how the graft is used, which approach is proposed and what restrictions apply while tissues heal.

After surgery, follow instructions about wound care, lifting, driving, bowel habits and sexual activity. Keep follow-up visits even when the bulge feels better, because examination checks healing and identifies bladder, bowel or recurrent-support problems.

Contact the surgical team urgently for fever, worsening abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, inability to pass urine, chest symptoms or a painful swollen leg. A new vaginal bulge, discharge, bleeding or pain during sex after recovery also deserves review rather than self-treatment.
