How effective is radiotherapy for soft tissue sarcoma?

Short answer

Radiotherapy can be effective for reducing local recurrence risk or controlling soft tissue sarcoma when surgery alone is unsuitable, with the best approach shaped by tumour features and the treatment goal.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How radiotherapy is used

For a soft tissue sarcoma in an arm, leg, abdomen, chest wall, or another region, radiation is directed at the tumour bed or the tumour itself. It may be given before surgery to help make removal possible, after surgery when microscopic cells may remain near the operation area, or as the main local treatment when an operation would cause major harm or cannot remove the tumour. Radiation can also ease pain, pressure, bleeding, or reduced movement from an advanced mass. It is a local treatment, so it does not replace treatment aimed at sarcoma cells elsewhere.

Preparing for treatment

A sarcoma team combines pathology, scans, surgical options, tumour depth and grade, nearby nerves or organs, and your priorities. Treatment planning marks the area precisely and protects healthy tissue as far as possible. Discuss wound healing, previous radiation, pregnancy, medicines, and work or activity needs. Skin soreness and tiredness may develop; depending on the body area, swelling, stiffness, bowel changes, or other site-specific effects can occur. Rehabilitation and skin care may help preserve movement and comfort.

When to seek care

Tell the treatment team about rapidly increasing swelling, new severe pain, a wound that opens or drains, fever, heavy bleeding, sudden limb weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Seek emergency help for uncontrolled bleeding, collapse, or sudden difficulty breathing. A new lump after treatment also deserves review, although it may reflect scar tissue, inflammation, or recurrence and cannot be judged by appearance alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the radiation is meant to achieve, whether it comes before or after surgery, how nearby nerves and organs will be protected, how it could affect wound healing or movement, and which follow-up scans or examinations are planned.

Questions people ask

Is radiotherapy always needed after sarcoma surgery?

No. The decision depends on the tumour’s features, margins, location, recurrence risk, and the balance of benefit and side effects.

Can radiotherapy treat sarcoma that cannot be removed?

It can control a selected local tumour or ease symptoms when surgery is not suitable, while the wider plan addresses any disease elsewhere.
