How effective is radiotherapy for penile cancer?

Radiotherapy uses focused energy to damage cancer cells in a defined area. For penile cancer, it may be considered when preserving the penis is a goal, when surgery is not suitable, or when treatment is needed after an operation. The target and dose are planned around the tumour and nearby healthy tissue. The result may be assessed through examination and follow-up rather than by symptoms alone. Some changes appear gradually, and treated skin can become sore or irritated during the course.

The cancer's size, depth, position, lymph-node involvement and cell type all influence the plan. Radiotherapy may control disease in the treated area, but it does not treat cancer elsewhere in the body unless those areas are also included.

Ask the oncology team whether radiotherapy is intended to remove visible cancer, reduce the chance of local return after surgery, relieve symptoms, or support another treatment. Clarify how the target will be mapped, how many visits are expected, and how the penis, skin and nearby structures will be protected. Report skin soreness, discharge, bleeding, urinary difficulty or pain early so supportive care can be adjusted.

Contact the treatment team promptly for heavy bleeding, rapidly worsening swelling, inability to pass urine, fever, severe pain, or skin breakdown that is spreading. Seek emergency help for uncontrolled bleeding, fainting, confusion or severe breathing difficulty. These problems need assessment regardless of how well the cancer appears to be responding.
