How effective is radiotherapy for multiple myeloma?

Short answer

Radiotherapy can be effective for relieving pain and controlling a specific myeloma deposit, but it does not treat multiple myeloma throughout the body.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main benefit
Relief of pain or control of a specific troublesome deposit
Treatment scope
A focused area, not myeloma throughout the body
Extra assessment
Bone strength, nerve symptoms, medicines, and movement

The role of focused radiation

Multiple myeloma affects plasma cells and can weaken bones. A carefully aimed radiation field may be used for a painful bone lesion, a mass pressing on nerves or the spinal cord, or another local problem. It can reduce tumour activity in that area and help symptoms, but medicines are generally needed to address myeloma in other parts of the body.

The team balances the target against nearby organs and the strength of the affected bone. Relief may build over days or longer, and pain can briefly change during treatment. Follow-up may include pain and movement review, blood tests, and imaging chosen for your condition. Radiotherapy does not by itself repair a weakened bone, so fracture risk may need separate assessment.

Planning and daily care

Tell your team where pain travels, whether you have numbness or weakness, and which movements are difficult. Ask whether the bone needs support, activity limits, or input from orthopaedics or physiotherapy. Take pain medicines as directed, protect the treated area from strain, and report new symptoms rather than increasing activity because pain improves.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for new leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain, or inability to bear weight. These can indicate pressure on the spinal cord or a fracture. Contact your oncology team for pain that is worsening, fever, confusion, or reduced urine, as myeloma and its treatment can affect more than the radiated site.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what local problem radiation is addressing, when pain relief may begin, whether the bone is at risk of fracture, how radiation fits with myeloma medicines, and which symptoms need emergency assessment.

Questions people ask

Will radiotherapy cure multiple myeloma?

Radiotherapy is usually a local treatment for a specific problem; wider myeloma care generally requires treatments that act throughout the body.

How quickly can pain improve?

Some people notice improvement during or after treatment, but timing varies and pain medicines may still be needed while the area settles.
