How effective is radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer?

The operation removes the uterus and cervix together with tissues beside the cervix; nearby lymph nodes may also be assessed. The aim is to remove visible cancer with a margin of healthy tissue when surgery is appropriate.

The team considers imaging, biopsy findings, tumour size, lymph nodes, general health and whether the cancer has spread beyond an area that surgery can safely address. Additional treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation may be advised if the surgical findings show features that raise concern for remaining disease.
