How effective is polyp removal for bowel polyps?

During colonoscopy, a clinician may remove a polyp with a snare or another endoscopic technique. The tissue is sent to a laboratory, where its type, size, cellular changes and removal edges can be assessed. This examination matters because a harmless-appearing polyp can contain changes that are not visible during the procedure.

Complete removal deals with the growth that was found, but it does not prevent new polyps from developing elsewhere or later. A broad-based, very large or difficult-to-reach polyp may need a staged procedure, an advanced endoscopic technique or surgical discussion. The follow-up plan depends on the pathology and the quality of the examination.

Follow instructions about eating, medicines and activity, particularly if a sedative was used. Keep the pathology review appointment even if you feel well. Ask when the next colonoscopy is due and whether the result means a shorter interval or a different procedure.

For recovery, rest as advised and watch for the symptoms listed below. Do not restart or stop prescribed medicines without checking with the endoscopy team, especially medicines that affect bleeding.

Contact the endoscopy service urgently for heavy or persistent rectal bleeding, severe or increasing abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, dizziness, fainting, fever or repeated vomiting after removal. These symptoms can indicate bleeding, infection or a bowel injury and should not be managed by waiting for routine follow-up.

Ask whether the polyp was removed completely, what the pathology showed, whether the bowel preparation affected the view, and when surveillance is recommended. Clarify which symptoms should prompt a same-day call.
