How effective is PET-CT scan for cancer of unknown primary?

The test combines a tracer-based picture of tissue activity with detailed body imaging. Areas taking up more tracer may need closer assessment, while the CT part shows their position and relationship to nearby structures. In cancer of unknown primary, this can map disease, suggest a likely starting region and help the team choose a safer, more useful biopsy target.

Tracer uptake is not specific to cancer: infection, inflammation and some normal tissues can also appear active. A clear scan does not exclude very small disease, and an area that looks suspicious still needs interpretation alongside symptoms, examination, previous scans and pathology.

Ask the imaging team how to prepare, including instructions about food, drink, medicines and blood sugar. Tell them if you may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have diabetes, or might struggle to remain still. Bring earlier reports and images if requested.

After the scan, the radiologist and oncology team combine the findings with biopsy results. They may recommend another targeted test, repeat tissue sampling or treatment planning. Ask which finding is actionable and whether the scan changes the suspected origin or only shows where disease is active.

Contact your cancer team promptly for new breathing difficulty, severe or worsening pain, confusion, weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or rapidly increasing swelling. These symptoms need assessment because they can signal an urgent complication, whether or not the primary tumour has been located.

Ask what the scan found, which areas need biopsy, what it cannot show, and how the result fits your pathology. Clarify when the report will be reviewed and what happens if no primary site is identified.
