How effective is pelvic MRI for bicornuate uterus?

A bicornuate uterus develops with two upper uterine cavities that join lower down, giving the uterus a heart-shaped outer contour. MRI produces detailed images in several planes, allowing the radiologist to assess the outer uterine surface, the separation between the cavities, the cervix, vagina, and nearby pelvic structures. This can help distinguish a bicornuate uterus from a septate uterus, where the outside shape and internal partition differ.

The scan describes anatomy; it does not by itself predict fertility, pregnancy, pain, or the need for surgery. Your gynaecologist interprets the report alongside symptoms, pregnancy history, examination, and any earlier ultrasound.

Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have metal or electronic implants, kidney problems, allergies, or difficulty staying still. Ask whether contrast is planned and whether you need to change eating or drinking beforehand. During the scan you lie still while the machine makes loud sounds; you can communicate with the team. A bicornuate uterus is usually an anatomical finding rather than an emergency. Seek prompt care for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever, or pregnancy-related pain or bleeding. After contrast, obtain urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or widespread hives. Contact the imaging service if you develop unusual symptoms during or soon after the scan.
