How effective is ovulation induction for anovulation?

Anovulation means an egg is not released regularly. Ovulation-induction medicines adjust hormone signals so an ovarian follicle can mature and release an egg. Treatment may use tablets or injections, with ultrasound and hormone checks used to guide timing and dose.

The likely response varies with the reason for anovulation, ovarian reserve, weight changes, thyroid or prolactin problems and other fertility factors. Restoring ovulation does not by itself ensure conception.

Start with an evaluation rather than taking fertility medicine without supervision. A clinician may check menstrual history, pregnancy status, thyroid and reproductive hormones, ultrasound findings and the fertility factors of both partners.

Follow the monitoring schedule closely because treatment may need dose changes or a planned time for intercourse or insemination. Ask about side effects, the chance of more than one follicle developing and the plan if several treatment attempts do not lead to ovulation or pregnancy.

Arrange assessment for absent periods, very irregular cycles or difficulty conceiving. During treatment, seek urgent advice for severe abdominal swelling or pain, breathing difficulty, faintness or rapidly worsening nausea, which can signal a complication requiring review.
