How effective is nerve root block for sciatica?

A nerve root block places medicine near a spinal nerve thought to be irritated. The aim is to calm inflammation and make leg pain easier to manage. It may be considered when pain limits sleep, walking, or physiotherapy, or when the clinician needs more information about which nerve is responsible. A response can support the clinical picture, but it is not a complete diagnosis by itself.

The result depends on the cause and severity of nerve irritation, the accuracy of the target, and how the symptoms behave over time. Back pain, numbness, or weakness may respond differently from shooting leg pain. Temporary relief can create an opportunity to restore movement and strength; it does not necessarily mean the disc or joint problem has resolved.

Tell the treating team about medicines, allergies, diabetes, infection, pregnancy, and any blood-clotting problem before the procedure. Ask what improvement is expected and how it will change your rehabilitation plan. Afterward, follow instructions about activity, keep the injection site clean, and note changes in pain, sensation, and leg strength. Avoid using temporary numbness as a reason to overload the back.

If relief is brief or absent, the next step may be reassessing the diagnosis, adjusting physiotherapy, or discussing another treatment. Repeated procedures should have a clear purpose and review plan.

Seek urgent care for new or worsening leg weakness, numbness around the groin, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever with severe back pain, or inability to walk safely. After an injection, urgent review is needed for severe headache, spreading redness, drainage, persistent loss of sensation, chest symptoms, or an allergic reaction.

Ask which nerve is suspected, what imaging and examination show, whether the block is mainly for relief or diagnosis, how long to monitor the response, and what exercises are safe afterward. Ask which changes mean the nerve needs urgent assessment.
