How effective is nebuliser treatment for asthma?

A nebuliser changes liquid medicine into a mist breathed through a mask or mouthpiece. Depending on the medicine, it can relax tightened airway muscles or reduce airway inflammation. In an asthma flare, a healthcare team may use it when symptoms are severe, a person is exhausted, or an inhaler with a spacer cannot be used effectively.

A nebuliser is not automatically more powerful than an inhaler with a spacer. The correct device depends on age, breathing ability, severity, and the prescribed medicine. It can cause shakiness, a fast heartbeat, or throat irritation, so treatment should not be started or repeated without a plan.

Follow your written asthma action plan and use reliever medicine exactly as prescribed. Sit upright, stay calm, and seek help if symptoms are not settling or are returning quickly. Keep nebuliser parts clean and allow them to dry if home use has been prescribed. A regular preventer inhaler remains important when advised; nebuliser treatment does not replace it unless a clinician changes your plan.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, drowsiness, collapse, or difficulty speaking. Seek urgent assessment when the reliever is not helping, symptoms are worsening, or you need it more often than your plan allows. Do not drive yourself if breathing is dangerously difficult.

Ask when your action plan calls for a nebuliser, which medicine and dose to use, and whether a spacer is suitable. Clarify how to recognise a flare that needs emergency care and how equipment should be cleaned.
