How effective is an MRI scan for Li-Fraumeni syndrome?

Li-Fraumeni syndrome increases the need for careful, regular assessment because several cancer types can occur. MRI uses magnets and radio waves to produce images of soft tissues. Depending on the surveillance plan, scans may focus on areas such as the brain, breast, or the whole body. A radiologist reviews the images for an abnormal area, but an unusual finding is not automatically cancer. It may lead to repeat imaging, examination, or a biopsy.

Use the surveillance schedule arranged by your genetics or oncology team, and tell the imaging service about implants, metal fragments, kidney problems, pregnancy, or difficulty lying still. Some MRI examinations use contrast medicine, while others do not. Keep appointments even when you feel well, because surveillance is intended to identify changes before symptoms appear. Ask how results will be communicated and what the next step would be if the scan is unclear.

Contact your clinician promptly for a new lump, persistent pain, unexplained bleeding, a changing mole, repeated headaches, weakness, or another symptom that is new for you. Do not wait for the next scheduled MRI when a concerning change appears. Seek urgent care for sudden weakness, confusion, severe breathing difficulty, or heavy bleeding.
