How effective is mole removal for moles?

A dermatologist chooses the approach after looking at the mole, its depth, and its position. Excision removes the lesion with a margin and usually allows tissue to be sent for pathology. A superficial technique may be considered for a raised, clearly benign mole, but the most suitable method depends on the diagnosis and clinical judgment. Removal may reduce catching, shaving irritation, or cosmetic concern. It does not stop other moles from appearing or changing, and every procedure can leave a mark, altered pigment, or a small area of numbness.

Before treatment, discuss the intended cosmetic result, whether pathology is planned, the wound location, and activities that may need to pause. Share your medicines and allergy history. During healing, follow dressing instructions, avoid picking, and limit direct sun exposure. Attend the result review even if the wound looks settled; the tissue report may affect whether observation or another step is advised.

Get advice if the wound develops spreading redness, increasing warmth, worsening pain, pus, fever, persistent bleeding, or separation of its edges. Seek urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding or faintness. A new or changing mole elsewhere, or a spot that bleeds without clear injury, needs a clinical review.
