How effective is mental health assessment for dementia?

Short answer
Mental health assessment can clarify cognitive, emotional and behavioural changes, support dementia evaluation and identify care needs, but it cannot by itself confirm every cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Assessment reviews
- Thinking, mood, behaviour and daily function
- A helpful companion
- Someone who knows the person’s usual abilities
Understanding the process
A clinician may ask about memory, language, orientation, mood, sleep, behaviour and changes in everyday tasks. A family member or trusted person can provide useful examples of changes over time. The clinician may also review medicines, physical health, hearing, vision and stress, since these can affect thinking. Assessment helps distinguish urgent changes from a gradual pattern and shows what support, monitoring or specialist evaluation may be appropriate. It is one part of a wider dementia assessment.
Prepare useful information
Write down examples such as missed appointments, repeated questions, getting lost, difficulty managing money or changes in personality. Bring a medicine list and, if the person agrees, invite someone who knows their usual abilities. Ask what further checks are needed, how to support independence safely and when reassessment is planned. See [Mental Health Assessment](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/mental-health-assessment/) and [Dementia](/conditions/dementia/).
When changes need urgent help
Seek urgent medical help for sudden confusion, new weakness, trouble speaking, a severe headache, fainting, a head injury, fever or a rapid change in behaviour. Arrange timely review for repeated falls, unsafe driving, wandering, medication errors, hallucinations or inability to eat and drink safely. Sudden confusion is not the same as a slowly progressive memory problem and needs prompt attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which changes are most concerning, what reversible contributors should be checked, whether a specialist referral is needed, and how family members can support daily safety.
