How effective is mammogram for breast cancer?

Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to create detailed images of breast tissue. It can show a mass, an area of architectural change or tiny calcium deposits. Some breast cancers are found before they cause a noticeable change, while dense tissue or overlapping structures can make images harder to interpret.

A result may be described as reassuring, unclear or suspicious. An abnormal image does not by itself prove cancer, and a clear image cannot explain every breast symptom. The radiologist considers the images alongside your examination and previous scans.

Follow the recommended next step, which may be comparison with earlier images, additional mammographic views, ultrasound or a biopsy. Bring details of prior breast procedures and tell the team about implants, pregnancy possibility or breast symptoms. On the day, avoid deodorant or powder on the chest if the imaging centre advises this, because some products can appear as marks on the image.

Keep the report and appointment details. If the imaging team requests further assessment, arrange it rather than assuming the finding is cancer or dismissing it as harmless.

Arrange clinical review for a new lump, persistent focal pain, nipple inversion, bloody discharge or a skin change, even if a recent mammogram was reassuring. Seek prompt care for a rapidly changing breast, marked redness with fever or severe worsening pain.

Ask what your report means, whether your breast tissue is dense, whether comparison images are available, and which follow-up test is recommended. Ask when results will be reviewed and which changes should prompt earlier contact.
