How effective is loop excision of the cervix for cervical dysplasia?

A thin wire loop removes the affected part of the cervix using an electrical current. The sample is checked to confirm the grade of cell change and whether the edges appear clear. This gives your clinician more information than a screening sample alone. Treatment is intended to prevent abnormal cells from progressing, but it does not remove the need for follow-up.

Healing varies. Light bleeding, watery discharge, or period-like cramps can occur after the procedure. Cervical dysplasia can return or remain, so scheduled cervical screening or another examination matters even when recovery feels straightforward.

Follow the discharge instructions about rest, bathing, swimming, intercourse, and inserting anything into the vagina while the cervix heals. Use only recommended pain relief, and keep the follow-up appointment so the laboratory result and next test can be discussed. Ask whether the result shows clear margins and when your next cervical check is due.
