How effective is liver resection for liver metastases?

The operation removes deposits and a surrounding margin. Scans map their number, size and position, their relationship to vessels and bile ducts, and whether cancer is active in other organs. The primary cancer, previous treatments and the health of the remaining liver also affect the recommendation.

Some metastases are treated after medicines have reduced their size; others are approached with surgery and additional local treatment. The goal may be long-term control or removal of all visible liver disease. Because microscopic cancer may remain elsewhere, surgery is followed by a personalised surveillance plan.

Ask whether a specialist multidisciplinary team has reviewed your scans and whether another scan or biopsy is needed. Clarify if surgery is possible now, if medicine could make it possible later, and what other local treatments could target deposits that are difficult to remove.

Prepare by sharing previous pathology, scan discs or reports, medicines and past treatment reactions. After surgery, attend reviews and report symptoms rather than waiting for the next scan.

After resection, contact the care team for fever, worsening abdominal pain, vomiting that prevents drinking, wound discharge, increasing swelling or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Seek emergency care for severe pain, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding or breathing difficulty.

Where did the metastases start, and does that change the expected benefit of surgery? Can all visible liver disease be removed while preserving enough liver? What treatment is planned around surgery? How will scans and blood tests monitor me afterward?
