How effective is liver resection for bowel cancer?

The surgeon removes the liver deposits together with a margin of surrounding tissue. The aim is to clear all visible disease while leaving enough healthy liver to work properly. Scans assess the number and position of deposits, their relationship to blood vessels and bile ducts, and whether cancer is present elsewhere.

Chemotherapy may be given before or after surgery to shrink deposits, test how the cancer behaves or reduce the chance of further growth. A multidisciplinary team weighs these findings with liver health, fitness and the bowel tumour's treatment history. A technically successful operation does not remove the need for surveillance.

Ask for review by a team experienced in colorectal and liver surgery. Bring scan reports, pathology results and a full medicine list. Discuss whether deposits are removable now, whether treatment could make surgery possible later, and whether ablation or other approaches are relevant.

After surgery, follow wound, activity, diet and medication instructions. Keep scheduled imaging and blood tests; they help detect recurrence or guide further treatment even when recovery feels good.

Contact the surgical team for fever, increasing abdominal pain, wound redness or discharge, repeated vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools or worsening swelling. Seek urgent care for severe pain, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding or breathing difficulty.
