How effective is a liver function test for alcohol use disorder?

A liver function test can show possible alcohol-related liver injury, but it cannot diagnose alcohol use disorder or measure drinking behaviour on its own.

What this means
The blood panel may measure enzymes and proteins linked with liver inflammation, bile flow and the liver’s ability to make certain substances. Abnormal results can occur with alcohol-related injury, but also with viral hepatitis, medicines, metabolic conditions or other liver problems. Normal results do not rule out alcohol use disorder or early liver disease.
Assessment usually combines a private discussion about drinking, cravings, control, withdrawal and effects on daily life with a physical examination and relevant tests. The purpose is support and safe care, not blame.
What to do next
Tell the clinician honestly about the type, amount and pattern of alcohol use, including the time of the last drink. Bring a medicine and supplement list. If you drink heavily or regularly, do not suddenly stop without medical advice, because withdrawal can be dangerous and may need supervised treatment.

Seek emergency help for yellow skin or eyes with confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, seizures or severe shaking. Arrange medical review for persistent nausea, poor sleep, memory changes, reduced control over drinking or a liver test result that has been flagged.
