How effective is laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy for ovarian cysts?

The surgeon uses a camera and instruments through small abdominal incisions to identify and separate the cyst from ovarian tissue. The cyst may be sent for laboratory examination. This approach can treat symptoms caused by pressure, pain or a cyst that is unlikely to resolve on its own, but suitability depends on the cyst’s size, appearance, symptoms, age and fertility plans.

Removing a cyst treats that particular growth; it does not prevent every future cyst. Some cysts are better monitored or managed in another way, and the surgeon may need to adjust the plan if the findings differ from scans.

Before surgery, discuss medicines, pregnancy plans, the possibility of removing only the cyst or the ovary, and what the scan suggests. Afterward, follow wound-care and activity instructions, keep mobile as advised, and attend the planned review. Mild abdominal soreness and fatigue can occur during recovery; your surgical team can provide individualized pain-control guidance.

Contact the surgical team for worsening pain, persistent vomiting, fever, increasing wound redness or discharge, heavy vaginal bleeding, or difficulty passing urine. Seek emergency care for sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting, chest pain or shortness of breath. Sudden severe pain before surgery also needs urgent assessment because ovarian torsion can threaten blood flow.

Ask why surgery is recommended for your cyst, how ovarian tissue will be protected, what alternatives are reasonable, and how the findings could affect fertility, follow-up and recurrence monitoring.
