How effective is IV fluid therapy for sepsis?

Sepsis is a dangerous response to infection that can affect circulation and the function of organs. IV fluids can increase the fluid available in the bloodstream and may support blood pressure and delivery of oxygen to tissues. Too much fluid can also be harmful for some people, so clinicians reassess breathing, blood pressure, urine output, examination findings and medical history while treatment continues.

Suspected sepsis needs urgent emergency assessment, not home hydration or a planned IV appointment. Tell clinicians when symptoms began, the suspected infection, recent medicines, allergies and major conditions. While waiting for help, keep the person safe, note changes in alertness and follow emergency instructions. Do not delay care to find a particular fluid treatment.

Call emergency services for confusion, extreme drowsiness, fainting, rapid or difficult breathing, blue or mottled skin, very little urine, severe weakness or a rapidly worsening infection. Fever is not required for sepsis, and a person can be seriously unwell with a temperature that is normal or low.

Ask what infection is suspected, how the response to fluids is being measured, and whether kidney, heart or lung problems change the fluid plan. Ask which changes after discharge require immediate reassessment.
