How effective is IUI for male factor infertility?

A semen analysis looks at sperm concentration, movement, and shape. In IUI, a laboratory prepares the sample and places the more suitable sperm into the uterus near ovulation. This bypasses the cervix, but sperm must still travel through the reproductive tract and fertilise the egg.

IUI is less likely to be appropriate when sperm production is severely reduced, sperm cannot be obtained for treatment, or there are significant female-factor findings. One semen result may not tell the whole story, so repeat testing or specialist assessment may be advised.

The fertility team may review repeat semen analyses, ovulation, tubal patency, medical history, medicines, and any test for sperm production. Treatment may follow a natural ovulation cycle or use medicines with ultrasound monitoring.

Ask what result would lead to IVF or another option rather than further IUI. Lifestyle changes and treatment of an identified medical issue may be discussed, but they should complement—not replace—a clear fertility plan.

Tell the clinic about severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, fainting, or breathing difficulty after insemination or ovulation medicines. Marked abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, or rapidly worsening discomfort needs prompt assessment.

Ask how the semen results affect IUI suitability, whether another sample is needed, how ovulation is monitored, and what the next option would be if IUI does not lead to pregnancy.
